Dying Fetus, c.1999
Interview for Necrosis Magazine
Melanie speaks to Kevin Talley

MR: What is your present lineup?

John Gallagher – guitar/vox
Jason Netherton – bass/vox
Sparky Voyles – guitar
Kevin Talley – drums

MR: What do you think of the underground metal scene? How do you think it has changed during your involvement?

Well, before my (Kevin) day in the early ninties, it was killer. But then it took a dive when there weren’t really any good bands coming out.  As for now, I believe the underground scene is on the rise again thanx to a lot of good bands and support for each other. Instead of trashing each other, bands as well as listeners are helping each other out and speading the death metal word around. Also, festival shows such as the Cleveland OHIO DEATHFEST bring the scene together for an awesome show and party. Festivals are good so long as the sound is good.

MR: What’s the scene like in your hometown nowadays?

The scene in Baltimore and D.C. is a lot beeter than when I moved up here 3 years ago.  DYING FETUS, PESSIMIST,  and a few other death bands in the area have built up the scene around here.  That’s why the scene in Texas is so good – because there are many GOOD bands that are getting together.  Also, guys like HOUND who do so much for the scene and Zig for his awsome artwork. Texas rules.

MR: What are your current goals and aspirations for the band? (Are you looking forward to playing the Ohio Deathfest again, which is now sold out of over half it’s tickets?!?)

Hell yeah!!  That’s gonna be tight – outta hand young. I love playing festivals so long as it goes smoothly – sound, and on schedule.

MR: What music styles and genres do you listen to, outside of the style you play with the band? Do these creep into the music at all as influences?

John listens to a lot of eighties glam rock – hence the sixth track on the new EP.  Before he shaved his head, he had a huge mop of RED CURLY HAIR that he would tease before he hit the stage in HIS eighties band called THE MOTLEY TWISTED BROTHERS!!!!!  NO JOKE!!

MR: You have one full-length release out already. What was the response from this, and how has it improved since? How’s the response been from the new EP release?

The response for ‘KILLING ON ADRENALINE’ is amazing. For the most part, people love it. But of course ya can’t please everyone.  People like the new EP as well but the new full length ‘DESTROY THE OPPOSITION’ will be out this summer and I think that will go over well with our fans.

MR: How does your newer material differ from your old, with the lineup changes which occured?

Well, I guess as far as the drums go, things are a bit faster and more intense. And since I don’t have the brutha in me like Rob has, I sometimes lack the groove that DYING FETUS needs – but this white boy is workin on it. As for Sparky, he is very tight and   – N’SYNC – with the rest of us making the band a tighter unit than before.

MR: What do you think of the Internet?

Ohh damn it’s fuckin’ amazing!!! It allows people to listen before they buy.You can always buy cheaper than ANY store. And if there is any band that is somewhat established, one can easily get a hold of them on the web. It fuckin’ breaks my god damn heart to hear that people are paying $15.98 for the new EP when they can go punch in Dying Fetus dot com in a computer and get it from BLUNT FORCE for $10.  Fuck that $16 dallar bullshit. Then people will feel D.F. ripped them off when it was the damn distributor. BUY FROM BLUNT FORCE RECORDS!!!!

MR: What can fans look forward to seeing live?

Live, fans can expect a good sound, tight, brutal, intense, well rehearsed quality show. You won’t be let down.

MR: Do you find it hard coming up with original material?

Sometimes, but most of the time everything flows smoothly. I don’t think we will be recording any more covers in the future.

MR: Is anyone in Dying Fetus involved in any other bands or musical projects?

John, Sparky, and myself (Kevin) were doing KNUCKLE DEEP for a while but that’s on the back burner since D.F. is headed to the studio in April. KNUCKLE DEEP is like FETUS – breakdowns continuously with some hardcore vox and hip hop feels. My interpretation is that if you like DYING FETUS you should like the KNUCKLE DEEP.

MR: What is the funniest thing you have seen lately?

Up in Smoke and Still Smoking – that shit is classic.

MR: If you could tour with with any 4 other bands, who would they be?

VADER, VEHEMENCE (killer band from Az.) KID ROCK and HATEBREED (to get some chicks to the show)

MR: What do you feel Dying Fetus brings to the scene?

Some good quality KILL YOUR MOTHER MUSIC.

MR: What kind of musical direction can we expect from you guys in the future?

I’m not sure – we don’t specifically shoot for a certain direction.  We just right shit that sounds good to us and if others like it–cool.  You will find that ‘DESTROY THE OPPOSITION’ contains even more diversity than ‘KILLING ON ADRENALINE’

MR: How is your label treating you? Are you satisfied with them so far?

Well, here in North America we are on our own newly founded BLUNT FORCE RECORDS, and although we get orders from elsewhere, MORBID RECORDS takes care of the rest of the world for the most part.

MR: You toured Europe – how was it? Who’d you tour with? Did you notice any significant differences in the crowds? How was your draw? I see the alcohol was less than kind to you… (referring to a pic on your website)!

Great picture isn’t it? That was a puke contest that – YES I won. And alcohol is always nice to me. The European crowds like to swing their mops around in circles making them dizzy. The result of this is them falling to the floor as a drunk would. If I recall correctly, most of them (and us) were very drunk most of the time. It was great and we are going again in June.

MR: Any parting words of wisdom to the masses?

Keep up the support you crazy fuckers – See ya in Ohio!
