Melanie talks to Sean and Chas, May 2000

MR: What is your present lineup?

Current SUMMON lineup is :
Sean “Xaphan” Peters / Guitar/ Vocals
Chas “Necromodeus” Schoals / Bass / Backing Vocals
Josh “Dominus” (aka Astaroth) Moore / Drums and
Chad “Haborym” Metzger / Guitar

MR: Can you give me a brief history of the band?

Xaphan: SUMMON was originally formed in 1991 by Necro and I, but the band split up shortly after, Necro went on to form MASOCHIST w/Tchort (of Wind of the Black Mountain). I joined Masochist in 1993. Shortly after things fell apart! So, in 1995, Necro and I reformed SUMMON with Amduscius (aka Supmur) from MASOCHIST. By the winter of 1995 we recorded our first true demo! “Fire Turns Everything… Black” and by the summer of 1996 a demo CD “Dark Descent of Fallen Souls” (limited to 1000 copies ). Much of 1997 through 1999 the band went through line-up changes and experimented with new musical ideas. By July of 1999 SUMMON recorded “Baptized By Fire” and joined forces with Killjoy and Baphomet Records.

MR: What are your musical and lyrical influences?

X: Pure hellpaced speed death, No Mercy, No Repent, Skull crushing blasphemy: All the old school bands like: Hellhammer, Venom, Mayhem, Blasphemy, Bathory, Whiplash, Sadus, Possessed, Infernal Majesty, Kreator, etc… ( you get the picture!)… Sick Metal!

MR: What music styles and genres do you listen to, outside of the style you play with the band? Do these creep into the music at all as influences?

X: I listen to everything; some of my personal favorites are : Pink Floyd. Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Doors, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin. I personally am influenced by everything I hear whether I like it or not! I do definitely feel –  any influence outside of your genre inspires creativity and originality.

MR: Describe two of your favorite songs and their composition; key elements fans should listen for, etc…

X: My Favorite SUMMON songs currently our new material : ‘Unto Which I Fall… ‘ and ‘Beneath The Cryptic Tombs’. Both of which we will be performing at all live shows upcoming… We will be in the studio August of 2000 to record our new album. Way faster, way heavier; the riffs are blazing fast and the drums are as quick as ever. Fans will definitely see the improvements!

MR: What do you think of the underground metal scene? How do you think it has changed during your involvement?

X, N: I feel for the most part it SUCKS. When we started everyone would support one another regardless of what they sounded like, now everyone is so concerned with it being Black Metal or Death Metal, when it all came from the same place. It’s all fuckin’ metal!

MR: What’s the scene like in MI nowadays?

N: There are tons of bands. No one will come together though, everyone has their own little thing going on. We have some good shit going around here but nothing is put together very well. There is hope, if people would get off there asses and do something. (sigh) I remember the old days!!!

X: There are some good bands from our area like: Lucifers Hammer, Wind Of The Black Mountains, Sado-Masochism, Production Grey, etc…

MR: What are your current goals and aspirations for the band?

N: Well I already have set my goals. We have done everything that I have totally wanted to do… Write music that I love and most normal people HATE.. Oh wait who’s normal. Next, would have to be tour with some killer bands. And eventually tour Europe, and continue to spread the hate and sickness through to the masses. Summon will have a stamp on music of this nature!

X: Yeah! And everyone else can and will fuck off!!!

MR: What has been the response so far from your latest release? What was the response to the release of your demos compared to the CD?

N: Well I think the response has been good, but I have to say we don’t care what people think. You are either going to love it or hate it. Still we don’t care what people think… We are recording music that we would want to hear and we are happy with the outcome, regardless of the two sided scene reaction (black metal, death metal).

MR: What do you think of the Internet?

N: I think it’s great for mail, contacts, finding shit and people not usually exposed to the public. It’s the future of the world, etc.. etc.. I’m not here to talk about computers and shit. FUCK BILL GATES rich MOTHER FUCKER.

MR: What can fans look forward to seeing live?

N: TOTAL FUCKING CHAOS!!! WHAT CAN SUMMON EXPECT FROM PLAYING LIVE. Blood, guts, broken bones, spilled booze, hair torn from heads, broken bodies, faces smashed… Sounds like a good fucking time.

MR: Any funny or horror show/studio stories?

X: Too many to list, my hands are tired of typing… Fuck Bill Gates.

MR: Is song or lyric writing collaborative, or do certain members do certain things?

X: I write all the lyrics. There is much more of a collaborative effort from all members now, whereas before it was independent ideas that where played in SUMMON. We try to not rush writing material, and really think about the next riff and not already thinking of the end of the song. The songs more or less create themselves. We are just interpreters of what’s in our heads! The music is first priority. Lyrics are secondary.

MR: You guys are raging terror unholy black metal! Where do you pull all this hate from?

X: Years of striving to be heard, years of floating namelessly in the underground, all the people dragging you down with Christian feed bullshit, the mindless millions brainwashed, to label you as sick and wrong!

MR: Where and how did you get your band name? Who came up with the idea?

X: Just a name that stuck in my head : To SUMMON the beast!

MR: Do you find it hard coming up with original material?

X: Sometimes we will be writing a song and all of a sudden someone realizes, that’s this song or that’s this riff from this band, usually then we start all over or just quit writing for that day!

MR: Is anyone in Summon involved in any other bands or projects?

X: Our guitarist Haborym has a goof side project called Sick Edward (It’s only for the severely retarded or Severely Drunk!@#$%^). We had an old porno grind band called Gardamilla. I have a side project in the works to be released on Baphomet sometime next year with Killjoy’s vocals on a couple of tracks!

MR: What is the funniest thing you have seen lately?

N: Those shirts running around that say Black Metal Sucks I think it’s all about money and a fashion statement, but don’t wear them to some places cause people take that shit personally. YOU WILL GET YOU SKULL CRUSHED!!!!

MR: If you could tour with any 4 other bands, who would they be?

X: Britney Spears, Nsync?, Back Street Boys, and Limp Bizkit just to kick their fucking asses all over the stage!!!!! HA HA HA HAHHHHHHH!

N: Murder, rape and pillage Tour!!!

MR: What do you feel Summon brings to the scene?

N: Beer drinking, dope smoking motherfuckers that like music that is extreme and kicks god in the GUTS… those are our friends and fans.

MR: What kind of musical direction can we expect from you guys in the future?

N: What people are expecting things from us now? We are going to change, we have already changed but the music will still be brutal as fuck.

MR: You’re currently being licensed through Necropolis Records, correct? What are you guys looking for in a label?

X: We are on Baphomet Rec. and licensed through Necropolis Rec. We have been label-less for many years, with the intention of releasing it ourselves. But we all feel the music deserves to be heard by the masses and none of us have time to do that kind of manufacturing and distribution!

MR: Any parting words of wisdom to the masses?

N: Summon has returned pissed off and more brutal than ever. Hails to everybody out there that we know and love, but for the rest of you fuckers look out! Summon is coming to plow through your towns! Thanks for the interview, talk to you soon.
